Freelance Copy-Editor

Job description

Law Business Research is looking for freelance copy-editors with excellent editing and layout skills. Freelancers will have responsibility for editing multi-author legal books written by contributors from around the world. Freelancers are also responsible for setting text on the page, making author proofs, liaising with our in-house editorial assistants, taking in emendations and corrections, and sending artwork to press. An ability to read technical text carefully and to revise it without harming the meaning is essential.

The books in question are yearbooks that must be sent to press on schedule. The books in the series range from approximately 100,000 to 300,000 words and from 15 to 50 chapters. Typically freelance contracts relate to the production of one book and involve 10 to 15 days’ work over a six-week time frame. The books are text-heavy and require minimal layout of images.

Initial contracts of one to two days cover work on sample chapters in Word and InDesign to allow freelancers to familiarise themselves with our style and procedures.

  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Excellent grammar
  • Good comprehension and editing skills
  • An ability to rewrite complicated text
  • Experience in book publishing

The following would also be advantageous:

  • Knowledge of the law
  • Knowledge of Adobe InDesign
  • Although layout training and guides will be provided, freelancers should have their own Adobe Creative Cloud software.

Only candidates who have the right to work in the United Kingdom will be considered for this role.
